Archival Research Talk

Portia Maultsby, Laura Boulton Professor Emerita of Ethnomusicology at Indiana University
David Benjamin, Head of Special Collections and University Archives, UCF Libraries

Maultsby will talk about her research and archives. Dr. Maultsby is the founding director of the Archives of African American Music and Culture at Indiana University. She has researched and written extensively about African American music with a focus on religious and popular traditions and the music industry. She is co-editor of the series “Black Music in Global Perspective,” published by the University of Illinois Press, and the creator of an interactive timeline in African American music featured on Carnegie Hall’s website.

David Benjamin, Head of Special Collections and University Archives in the UCF Libraries, will talk about using archives, what to expect, and some of the challenges you may face when doing research in an archive or special collection. David has been a practicing archivist for more than thirty years, working in both very large and small archives and special collections.

Constructing Identity and Meaning in Performance of Black Gospel Music on the Global Stage

Portia Maultsby, Laura Boulton Professor Emerita of Ethnomusicology and founding director of the Archives of African American Music and Culture at Indiana University, will be conduct a colloquium titled, “Constructing Identity and Meaning in Performance of Black Gospel Music on the Global Stage: The Netherlands, a Case Study.”

Maultsby has been involved in media/multimedia productions for PBS, BBC, NPR, and museums. Her current project include the new National Museum of African American Music in South Carolina. A native of Orlando, Maultsby was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and senior Scholar in Residence at the Smithsonian Institution, Museum of American History. Her research on African American music is a permanent feature on Carnegie Hall’s official website.

On Thursday, Maultsby will discuss archival research methodologies with students and UCF librarians.
